A Barcelona hotel may legally offer a compliant fixed smoking guestroom, and in-room cigarette smoking in a private apartment is legally possible subject to conditions. Neither route guarantees property permission or availability; serviced apartments, aparthotels and villas need direct checks, and Barcelona beaches are not a fallback. The key is to confirm the exact smoking location in writing before you book.

Lawful in-room smoking may be possible, but property permission and room category still need confirmation.

Practical reality
How usable this destination is in practice — separate from what the law permits.
CigarettesFor a cigarette-smoking visitor, buying cigarettes is straightforward, but indoor use should not be expected. Open-air hospitality terraces are the most practically common setting, subject to venue policy and the terrace layout; Barcelona beaches are not a smoking option. Accommodation smoking arrangements remain property-specific and were not systematically evidenced in this pass.
Treat “smoking-friendly” as a request that needs a precise answer, not a generic property label. A Barcelona hotel can legally offer a compliant fixed smoking guestroom, and in-room cigarette smoking in a private apartment is legally possible subject to conditions. For serviced stays and villas, ask whether indoor smoking is permitted rather than assuming their residential style settles the question.
Spain’s rules allow hotels to reserve up to 30% of fixed guestrooms for smokers, provided statutory conditions are met: separation, ventilation, signage, advance notice and worker-access conditions. This route applies to an identified smoking guestroom, not ordinary indoor hotel areas. Availability varies by property, so ask for the exact room category and a written answer tied to your dates.
In-room cigarette smoking in a private apartment is legally possible subject to conditions, but that does not give a traveller automatic permission. Ask whether smoking is permitted in the specific apartment and, if the answer is positive, have the owner identify the agreed location in writing. Check the house rules and any building restrictions before booking.
Serviced apartments and aparthotels may fall under different legal classifications depending on the establishment. Confirm the property type, house rules and building restrictions, then ask directly whether cigarette smoking is permitted indoors. For a villa, ask whether cigarette smoking is permitted; if the answer is yes, secure written owner permission and confirm any building rules.

Airports have no blanket venue-wide cigarette-smoking permission: indoor smoking is prohibited, while general outdoor areas, outdoor terraces and designated outdoor areas may permit smoking subject to conditions.
Property permission does not create legality. Confirm the practical setup matches what the law allows.

On July 21, 2026, the Council of Ministers approved a project to amend Law 28/2005 and send it to the Cortes Generales. The proposal would prohibit smoking on hospitality terraces, maritime and river beaches, collective-use swimming pools, sports facilities, national parks, outdoor public-event premises and additional protected outdoor areas. Parliamentary registration or enactment was not verified, so the proposal is not treated as current law.
If enacted, smoking would become prohibited on hospitality terraces and across several outdoor settings that remain legally available under the current national framework.
