The Essentials
The essentials first. Tap any answer for its explanation, sources and check date.
Tourist accommodation may designate smoking rooms, units or floors up to 40% of the total, with separation, signage and ventilation preventing smoke spread. Confirm that your exact room is designated and permitted; this does not establish availability at a particular hotel.
Applies in: Portugal

The law expressly allows open-air areas of tourist accommodation. A genuinely open-air balcony still needs property permission; an enclosed space can fall under indoor restrictions. Confirm the balcony attached to your exact room.

The smoking law allows designated units in tourist accommodation. Tourism guidance separately defines registered tourist apartments. An advertised serviced apartment may have another legal classification; the checked evidence does not settle that exact unit’s eligibility. Property permission alone is insufficient.

A hotel may offer designated smoking bedrooms within the 40% limit, or a compliant separate smoking room. Separate smoking rooms are 18+ and have no service. This legal possibility does not establish which hotel offers either arrangement.
Applies in: Portugal

Airport interiors are smoke-free except for compliant designated smoking rooms. Those rooms require separation and ventilation, are 18+ and offer no service. The legal exception does not establish a currently accessible room in your terminal.

Ordinary railway-station open-air areas have a legal exception; enclosed station areas are smoke-free. Metro premises are separately prohibited. Follow the exact station operator’s restrictions and signs; this is not confirmation of a smoking area at a particular platform.

Smoking is prohibited on public passenger trains. A station’s open-air exception does not extend to the train.

The ordinary indoor customer area is smoke-free. A compliant, separate, ventilated smoking room can be provided, 18+ and without bar or restaurant service. Hospitality sites need at least 100m² of customer area and 3m ceiling height; the smoking space and anteroom may occupy at most 20%.

The law expressly allows open-air hospitality areas. Enclosed terraces fall under indoor restrictions, and management can prohibit smoking. Confirm permission at the particular terrace; a separate smoking room does not permit smoking throughout the restaurant.

The checked national law covers collective indoor premises and hospitality venues, with bounded smoking-room exceptions. It does not establish a general exemption for a members-only smoking club or confirm a particular club’s classification. Membership alone is not evidence of permission.

The ordinary indoor bar or restaurant service area is smoke-free. A separate compliant smoking room has no bar or restaurant service and does not make the venue an unrestricted smoking pub.

Ordinary open-air street space falls outside the general indoor restriction. Protected sites, children’s areas and restrictions imposed under other legislation or management rules remain smoke-free. Follow local signs and avoid restricted premises.

Before booking, confirm smoking permission for your exact room, balcony or shared area, including access hours.

Albufeira’s visitor conduct code restricts drinking alcohol on public streets; licensed hospitality areas have a separate exception. A bar’s terrace permission does not extend to carrying your drink into the street. Follow smoking signs and staff instructions. This code does not establish a blanket outdoor smoking ban or quantify how often smoking rules are enforced.

Outlook: Tightening
EU tobacco-product and advertising rules are under review following an April 2026 evaluation and the tobacco-free-generation policy. This is EU-level policy work, not an adopted new Albufeira hotel, balcony or terrace ban. The retained source establishes no Portuguese commencement date or automatic change to these answers.

Each answer shows its own check date and legal scope. Property policy, practical facilities and legal permission are checked separately. An edition date does not mean every claim was checked again.
Legally unclear means the question was researched but a reliable answer was not established. It is not permission.

Ordinary open-air park areas fall outside the general indoor restriction. Children’s playgrounds and other protected areas remain smoke-free, and park management can impose additional restrictions. This does not confirm permission throughout any named park.

Albufeira is a coastal beach destination. The national indoor restriction does not create a blanket ban on ordinary open-air beaches. Beach management and other applicable rules can restrict smoking: follow the signs at your particular beach, and keep away from children’s areas. This is not confirmation of permission at every beach concession.
